IAOS Young Statisticians Prize for year 2017 Announcement of Competition


To encourage more young statisticians to take an active interest in official statistics, the International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS) is announcing its next annual competition for the best paper in the field of official statistics written by a young statistician.  In addition to the monetary prizes, the first place winner will receive travel funds to present the paper at one of the sessions at the 61st World Statistics Congress in Marrakech, Morocco in July 2017.


We encourage submitters to address, and propose solutions to, pressing methodological or strategic issues in the area of official statistics at the regional, national or international level. The paper must be ten or fewer pages in length, be submitted in English, and not have been previously presented in a public forum or published. An international panel will judge the papers based on the following criteria:


  • Scientific and/or strategic merit;

  • Originality;

  • Applicability of the ideas in (practice of) statistical offices; and

  • Quality of the exposition.


Papers must be submitted by December 15, 2016 till 11:59 PM according to (GMT+2) timing. The decision of the panel will be final. Prizes will only be awarded if papers of significant quality are submitted.


A maximum of three co-authors is allowed for a paper. An author can participate in only one paper. The author or authors of the best paper will be awarded:

  • A cash prize valued at €1,500 (divided among co-authors if applicable);

  • Presentation of the paper at a session at the 61st World Statistics Congress, with airfare and hotel accommodation provided (for only one author in situations of co-authorship);

  • Two years of IAOS membership; and

  • A certificate of award from the IAOS acknowledging success in this competition.


Prizes may also be awarded to those in second and third place:

  • 2nd  Place - A cash prize valued at €1000, 2 years of IAOS membership, and a certificate;

  • 3rd  Place - A cash prize valued at €500, 2 years of IAOS membership, and a certificate.


Prize winning papers will be considered for publication in the Statistical Journal of the IAOS.

To be eligible, authors (and co-authors) must:

  • Be under the age of 35 on December 15, 2016; and

  • Be employed[1] by an official statistical agency[2] on December 15, 2016.


Submissions must comprise a maximum of 10 pages plus a cover page that must include:



·    A mention that it is a “Submission for the IAOS 2017 Prize for Young Statisticians”;

·    The title of the paper;

·    The name(s), job title(s), and e-mail addresses of the author(s);

·    The name of the employing official statistical agency(ies); and

·    An abstract of no more than 15 lines.


Any material beyond the core text of the paper, such as table of contents, references, appendices, tables, and graphs, must be contained within the maximum of 10 pages.


Any submission exceeding 10 pages plus the cover page will be disqualified.

[1] Full-time, part-time, or contractual employees are eligible. Professional consultants or members of the teaching profession carrying out a contract with the agency are not eligible. An employee who also teaches or studies on a part-time basis is eligible.

[2] A National or International Statistical Agency, the Statistics Department of a Central Bank or the Statistics Department of a Ministry or Regional or Local Government in a decentralized National Statistical System.

IAOS Members Newsletter August, 2016

  Dear IAOS members and supporters, 

Welcome to the IAOS newsletter.


I would like to begin this newsletter by offering congratulations to our SJIAOS Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, Fritz Scheuren who has been awarded the ASA Mentoring Award.  This award iss given each year to an American Statistical Association member who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to providing significant early-career support to statistics students, statisticians or statistical researchers. The award honours those recognized by their colleagues for their sustained efforts to champion the work and develop the careers of statisticians.


This timely award recognises Fritz's career-long superior mentoring, tireless encouragement, generosity of time and knowledge and positive influence on generations of statisticians and non-statisticians alike. As you know, Fritz is a passionate statistician, who has contributed much to American and official statistics throughout the world.  On behalf of the IAOS members, I offer our congratulations.  There is more about the award at the ASA website -



I would also like congratulate the winners of the 2016 IAOS Young Statistician Prize.  This year's winner is Rolando Gonzales Martinez, from Bolivia.  The winning paper will be presented at the 2016 IAOS conference.  (More on the YSP16 below).


I am also pleased to announce the launch of the YSP 2017 competition. There is more information about the competition later in the newsletter and on the IAOS website.


The programme for the IAOS 16 conference is now finalised and is available on the IAOS2016 website . My thanks to the IAOS Programme Committee (chaired by Eric Rancourt, Statistics Canada) and the Local Programme Committee in Abu Dhabi (under the leadership of H.E. Butti Al Qubaisi of SCAD, our hosts).


As the newsletter shows, the SJIAOS under the editorship of Dr. Kirsten West, goes from strength to strength.  One exciting initiative is the agreement between IAOS and the Inter-American Statistical Institute (IASI), to publish material from each other's journals. This will allow greater dissemination of material of papers to both organisations.


The newsletter contains a wide range of information on these items and other topics of interest to those involved in official statistics. On behalf of the IAOS Executive, I thank you for your support and encourage you to continue to participate in our Association activities.

World Bank Fund Support for attending the IAOS 2016 conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 6-8 December 2016

IAOS members are advised that the closing date for applications for World Bank funding to attend this year's IAOS 16 conference in Abu Dhabi, UAE is September 8, 2016.

To be eligible for support, applicants must

a) be a permanent resident of a developing country

b) be a member of the ISI and the IAOS

c) have a role in the conference such as speaker, session organiser, discussant or chair.

d) have not received funding from the IAOS or World Bank to attend a statistical conference previously ( or at least for the last four (4) years)

e) not be receiving funding from another source to attend the IAOS16 conference
